PRIVATE WATER SUPPLY TESTING IN CORNWALL: BOREHOLES, WELLS & SPRINGS
Know exactly what's in your water and what to do about it.
We test private supplies across Cornwall and ensure your water is safe to drink.
PRIVATE WATER IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
If your water comes from a borehole, well or spring, there's no water company checking it for you. Quality depends on the ground it travels through, the land around the source and the condition of your system. All three can change.
Clear water isn't always safe water. Bacteria, nitrates and metals like arsenic can't be seen, don't smell and can't be tasted. A proper laboratory test is the only way to know what you're drinking.
Cube Water tests private supplies across Cornwall for homes, farms, holiday lets and businesses. And because we also design, install and service filtration systems, we don't just hand you a report. If your water needs treating, we fix it and ensure it works and is safe.
WHEN SHOULD YOU TEST YOUR WATER?
-
Before you start using a new supply, including a newly drilled borehole
-
Once a year as a minimum for any supply used for drinking other than solely for owner-occupier use
-
After heavy rain or flooding, when surface water can reach wells and springs
-
If the taste, smell or colour changes, or you notice staining or scale
-
After work on the supply, such as pump changes, tank cleaning or new pipework
-
Before buying or selling a property with a private supply
-
Before letting a holiday property, or if you supply water to the public or staff and then annually thereafter.
WHAT WE TEST FOR
Every supply is different, so we match the tests to your source and your site.
Typical parameters include:
Microbiological E. coli and coliform bacteria counts. These show whether the water has been contaminated by sewage, livestock or surface run-off and they are among the most important checks for any drinking supply.
Chemicals and metals Nitrate and nitrite (common near farmland), iron, manganese, aluminium, nickel, copper, lead and arsenic amongst others. Cornwall's geology and mining history mean some metals are worth checking even in clear water and there are strict limits for some of these.
Physical and aesthetic pH, turbidity, conductivity, colour, taste and odour. These affect how water looks and tastes and acidic water can attack pipes and fittings.
Site-specific extras Where your source or land use suggests a risk, we can add further tests to ensure your drinking water is safe.

HOW IT WORKS - SIMPLE, CLEAR AND LOCAL
1. Talk to us Tell us about your supply and what's prompted the test. We'll recommend the right sampling for your source.
2. We take the sample Our engineers collect the sample from the correct point using sterile containers, so the result reflects your water and not the way it was collected.
3. Laboratory analysis Your sample goes to a UKAS accredited laboratory for testing.
4. Results in plain English You receive a report that explains each result, what it means and whether it meets drinking water standards. If something needs attention, we tell you exactly what to do next.
A TEST IS ONLY HALF THE JOB
Most testing services stop at the report.
If your water fails to meet regulatory standards, you're left to work out the fix on your own.
With Cube Water, the result leads straight to a solution. Our engineers specify and can install the right treatment for what the test found, then retest so you have proof that your water is safe to drink.
Common treatments include:
-
UV disinfection for bacteria
-
Sediment and carbon filtration for particles, taste and odour
-
Iron and manganese removal to prevent staining and remove any metallic taste
-
pH correction to protect pipework and fittings
TESTING FOR EVERY KIND OF PRIVATE SUPPLY
Homes: peace of mind for your family, plus the evidence you need when buying or selling a property with a borehole, well or spring.
Farms: testing for drinking water and for supplies used in dairies and food production.
Holiday lets and B&Bs: keep guests safe and your records in order.

WHAT THE REGULATIONS SAY
Private water supplies in England are covered by the Private Water Supplies (England) Regulations 2016. Local authorities, including Cornwall Council, have duties around supplies that serve commercial activities or more than one property. Supplies serving a single home are generally not monitored unless the owner asks, which makes your own regular testing important.
Our testing helps you keep on top of your responsibilities. It does not replace any sampling the council is required to carry out.
